Codename Scorpio, the One X truly was a marvel offering an immersive 4K experience in the gaming world.

That said, let’s check out the specs:At the heart of the Xbox One X was a custom AMD APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) which Microsoft called the Scorpio Engine. With 8 CPU Cores and 40 GPU compute units, it was a beefy upgrade from the one in Xbox One. Built on TSMC’s 16nm fabrication, it packed seven billion transistors in 360mm square ! This eliminated the need for the eSRAM buffer, freeing up die space and offering a substantial jump in memory bandwidth (from 68.3 GB/s to 326 GB/s). from the GPU in PS4 Pro, One X offered 43% more shader throughput.

The CPU was a bottleneck despite being a feat of innovation, making games struggle to run past 30FPS. It was further accentuated by a spinning hard disk for storage. Even with a move from SATA-II to SATA-III, it was much slower than a flash-based storage.

The original Xbox One launched in 2013, competing with the PlayStation 4. When in 2016, Sony announced the PlayStation 4 Pro, a more powerful version of PS4 with better fidelity and higher framerate. Microsoft quickly came out in 2017 with the Xbox One X, boasting the title of “World’s most powerful console” focusing on true 4k gaming.

While the Xbox X and S are the current generation, the Xbox One X still isn’t obsolete for modern titles. Many popular games released in recent years have received “Xbox One X Enhanced” patches. These patches bring true 4K experience, higher frame rates and HDR support. Games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5, Elden Ring and Grand Theft Auto V run flawlessly on the 2017 beast.
